The Maldives - a true paradise on Earth

Updated: Jun 5, 2021

The Maldives has always been an obsession to the world when thinking about a romantic holiday, a honeymoon or a luxurious and scenic destination to escape from reality.

The Maldives is a nation of islands in the Indian Ocean, that spans across the equator. The country is comprised of 1192 islands that stretch along a length of 871 kilometres. While the country covers an area of approximately 90,000 square kilometres, only 298 square kilometres of that is dry land. (Source: Visit Maldives)

Its unique geography mesmerises the world, from transparent turquoise seawater to stunning coral reefs and beautiful white sand beach. The beauty of Maldives is not only above the water but also under the water - the reefs. They are home to a thousand species of fish, manta rays, whale sharks and blacktip reef sharks. It's a colourful and lively world under the sea that is in danger and needs our protection to stop overfishing and overexploitation of the ocean resources.

Life on an island

We landed at Maldives airport in the rain and grey sky. Then, we took the seaplane to one of the islands. It was our first time on a seaplane and the experience was fantastic to take off and landing above the water. The seaplane has 15 seats and it was quite a bumpy flight on the way going to the island, but it was a smooth one on the way back with a clear blue sky.

We stayed at Constance Moofushi Resort and had the best experience once in a lifetime. The landscape at Constance Moofushi is exceptional, the staff and services are amazing. It seems like life on an island makes people look happier and younger. It's a simple life living with nature and taking care of each other. It's quiet, peaceful and calm.

Away from city noises and the bustling lifestyle, we had 4 days of healing and recharging. We made the most of swimming, snorkelling and lying on the beach. Listening to the sound of the waves, the water, the sea, I'm thankful for the ocean. Our humans have benefited so much from the ocean - the oxygen we breathe, the fish we eat, the cooling pad of the heating Earth, the beauty we admire, the healing we require and the calmness we desire.

We've taken so much from the ocean without a proper appreciation. Instead of protecting the ocean, we've overexploited it by industrializing fishing and dumping plastic wastes. Here on the island, people take care of nature by protecting the marine life around, reducing plastic wastes to the minimum and nourishing the coral reefs.

Rebalance ourselves

Although we came to the Maldives in the rainy season, we were quite lucky to be able to enjoy some sunshine for 2 days. Though it was raining, it's still a refreshing atmosphere. We've got chances not to focus too much on our devices and let our brains relax.

We all need moments to rebalance ourselves as we're all burnout with our busy daily life. Balance is important because everyone cannot resist ageing and get tired. The only way to prolong the process is to learn to balance ourselves by engaging ourselves more with nature. Nature has the power to heal and we cannot survive without nature.

When the Maldives opens the border for tourism again with precautions, we decided to go there to experience travel again and to rebalance ourselves. The pandemic has stopped the world from moving and we all need to learn lessons from it to move forward sustainably and eco-friendly.
